Horse markets and shows in Ireland

There are only a few spots in Europe, in which the tradition of horse trade is still alive:
Ireland is one of these places. Here, people do not only look, talk shop, and bargain, they also party – and not too little. Irish horse markets have always had the character of funfairs.
Therefore, if you go to a horse market while on your Ireland holiday, you do not only get to see Irish horses of different breeds, but you can also experience very closely a piece of authentic Irish live.
The most famous market is the one in Ballinasloe in the West of the island (taking place from 4. to 12. of October, 2008), there are numerous „horse shows“ in Ireland, on which horses are judged on their breeding value or are shown in competitions of different disciplines, such as show-jumping or hunting. The most important connemara pony show takes place every third Thursday in August, every year in Clifden. This show takes place on the showground, and hundreds of ponies are shown. Even more people come every year to look at these outstanding ponies, the “crème-de-la-crème” of the Connemara ponies. Traditionally not only the most beautiful ponies win awards, some exhibitioners show self made oven clothes, beautiful cabbages or cakes, which are given prizes.
The royal Dublin horse show on the contrary (6. to 19. August, 2008) is very glamorous, and counts to a very important society event. People come here to see and be seen!

To all of these three important events the Katja van Leeuwen horse riding agency in Bonn offers one week bus round trips, which can be combined with stud visits. Who prefers to travel on his own, can get an individual tour package from her:
Journey, accommodation in a cottage, hotel, or at a horse farm, horse riding holidays, sightseeing or just a few days wellness can be arranged to personal liking.
